Mariah’s Story

Mariah is a third-grade teacher in #Tucson. After completing over 250 hours of sweat equity, saving o and taking financial classes she purchased her home with Habitat Tucson this year.
Someone once told her, she would never be able to buy her own home.
“That person said I was too poor and that I needed to shut that dream from my life,” She recalls. “Well, that person was wrong. His words were only words. I put all the action into it. I changed those words into action.”
This summer, her dreams of having a safe place to call home came true. After all her classes, sweat equity, and determination, we welcomed Mariah and her son to their new home in Minton Court.
Currently, Mariah works for the TUSD school district as a third-grade teacher also teaching dual language in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE).

At first, Mariah was nervous about doing construction work. “It ended up being really fun. I was capable! I completed my job and the builders made me feel comfortable. Everything about this experience has helped me and molded me into the person I want and need to be. In the past I felt so isolated. Habitat is giving me the opportunity to build relationships and my own home.”
