Growing up Richard moved over 20 times with his family.
He wanted something different for his children…
“We want more stability for the kids. We want them to have a home that they can grow into and grow with. We don’t want them packing their rooms up every year or worry that they’ll grow out of the space they’re in,” says Kaitlin.
Richard had known about Habitat for Humanity a long time and had even volunteered for Habitat in the past, but applying to own a Habitat home had never occurred to him. Not until a friend at work got accepted into the program. “It got me thinking, maybe we could do this,” says Richard.
They’ve been completing their sweat equity alongside friends, volunteers, and future neighbors. Every day the dream of homeownership feels more within reach.
“Habitat to us means family,” says Kaitlin. “Everybody here wants to help everybody. It’s not for an individual gain, it’s for our greater good. Habitat families want to build together. Take classes together. Have our kids play together.”
Richard added, “Cameron met the kids from the other families for the first time the other week and when we walked in today, he saw them again and said, ‘Look Mom, my friends!’ All these kids are going to grow up together and that’s what Habitat is.”
