Apply for a Home
Habitat for Humanity Tucson welcomes diversity and encourages all Tucson area community members who meet the three basic criteria to apply for a Habitat home.
Habitat for Humanity is an Equal Housing Opportunity provider. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, age, disability, religion, marital or family status, sexual orientation, or because all or part of an applicant’s income is derived from public assistance programs.
All homeowner applications are reviewed by the Homeowner Selection Committee, a group of community volunteers who work under the supervision of Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors and staff. The selection process usually takes about six weeks.
To apply, an applicant:
- must be a first time home buyer according to HUD’s definition (http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/ref/sfhp3-02.cfm)
- must be a legal resident;
- must agree to a criminal background check;
- must qualify using the household size and income listed below:

Families are selected based on the following three criteria:
- Need
The applicant’s current living situation and whether they have the means to qualify for a home with a traditional mortgage lender will be considered. Does a majority of the applicant’s income go toward housing? Is the applicant’s housing substandard or temporary? Applicants who qualify based on their ability to pay will also receive a home-visit to further evaluate their living conditions. - Ability to Pay
During the application and selection process each applicant’s income will be considered. The applicants need to have a steady source of income. They must be able to pay a monthly mortgage and their credit history needs to indicate this. Habitat homeowners are responsible for their monthly mortgage payment, property taxes and insurance.
Above is a chart with minimum and maximum family income requirements based on family size. - Willingness to Partner
Each applicant is required to complete a minimum of 200 ‘sweat equity’ hours. The hours can be completed by volunteering at the construction site of their future home or one of their neighbors’ homes, by working at the HabiStore, by working in the Habitat office or by serving at another community endeavor.Homeowner education classes and workshops are a mandatory part of the sweat equity requirement. The classes are designed to help families prepare for homeownership. They are entitled: Introduction to Budgeting, Budget Class I, Budget Class II, The Good in Green, Budgets & Unplanned Expenses, Green Building and Energy Efficiency, Being a Good Neighbor & Building Community, Home Maintainance and Security, The Purchase Contract and Closing Paperwork, Understanding the Mortgage Payment, Home Insurance and Taxes, and two family build days.
Habitat homeowners may also be asked to participate in media interviews and presentations to sponsors and other community groups by sharing their personal stories.
