Growing in Partnership
There are a lot of things that inspire Mary Burke to volunteer with Habitat and to partner with Habitat families.
“It’s a combination of things,” she said. “It’s so rewarding to see people able to succeed to the point where they get their first home, to see that process. It’s been rewarding to see the growth in Habitat too.”
Mary has partnered with many Habitat families. One memorable partnership she had recently was with new Habitat homeowner, Pat Diflo, who received the keys to her home earlier this year.
“I loved working with Pat and sharing her joy in reaching such a long-term goal,” Mary said. “I always learn something from the families and I’m inspired by their journeys.”
Mary’s volunteer journey with Habitat has been marked by personal growth as well. Through partnering with Habitat families, she’s found her public voice by introducing them at the home dedications.
“I still don’t like public speaking,” she said. “But I went from not being able to do it, to being able to! Looking up to see the familiar Habitat faces and the families about to get a home makes it easier. To learn about the families and share their story, that’s my favorite part.”
