It was another great day with the Home Depot Foundation on May 11th. We had 500 volunteers working on tasks ranging from painting and planting to wall raising and assembling tresses. This large group of people completed about 3,000 hours of volunteer work. In the two days that they volunteered they completed enough hours to build three houses. Photos by Dan Francis.

In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, construction crews of women volunteers all across the country will be pounding nails and raising walls at Habitat construction sites in recognition of National Women Build Week, April 30 – May 8. Here in Tucson, on Wednesday, May 4, local women volunteers worked on the Dowayee family’s future home to contribute to the effort of eliminating poverty housing.

The Pottenger family will be celebrating this Thanksgiving with something significant to be thankful for: a new home. Habitat for Humanity Tucson has a lot to be thankful for as well. The sponsors, the National and Arizona Catholic Daughters of America, and hundreds of hard working volunteers have completed Habitat’s 327th home just in time for the holidays.

Last year on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Habitat for Humanity Tucson raised the walls on four new homes for hardworking Tucson families at Building Freedom Day. This year, with the help of many generous donors and a grant from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2, Habitat Tucson began seven homes. In order to raise all the walls, Habitat brought together more than 500 volunteers made up of community members, representatives from local businesses, congregations, members of the military and current and future Habitat homeowners as early as 5 a.m. in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11 nine years ago. On September 11, 2009, Habitat for Humanity Tucson along with 350 volunteers, raised the walls on four homes in the Corazon Del Pueblo home development. It took eight months, more than 1,200 hours of homeowner sweat equity and 10,000 construction site volunteer to complete these homes. On June 4, the families selected for these homes were ready to move in! They cut the ribbon across the door, put the key in the lock for the first time, and stepped across the threshold, beginning their new lives as homeowners!

Leland's Army was started last year as a way to recognize volunteers who have demonstrated the spirit of community and who have exemplified Habitat’s mission. This luncheon was held to induct four new members to Leland's Army and to recognize the sponsor's of the mural where their names are placed.

In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, construction crews of women volunteers all across the country pounded nails and raised walls at Habitat construction sites in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 2 - 10. In the Tucson area, on Saturday, May 8, local women volunteers worked on the Pottenger family’s future home in Marana. Lowe’s has provided Habitat for Humanity Tucson with a $5,000 grant, as well as in-store volunteer training opportunities, in support of the local Women Build.

After months of hard work, Habitat for Humanity Tucson celebrated the completion of the Lopez family home in Amado. Over the past year, Juan Lopez, a single father with two sons, has worked hard to complete his 200 hours of sweat equity volunteer time and save for a down payment; two basic requirements for all Habitat homeowners. When asked how he felt when he learned he was going to get a Habitat home, Lopez said: “Ecstatic. It was an immense joy. Right after hanging up the phone, the kids and I started jumping around, laughing, until we got tired and finally huddled in a family hug.”

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has awarded a grant to Habitat for Humanity Tucson for a fourth Thrivent Builds home in Pima County. Construction on the home for the Abdi/Abdullahi family will began on March 20 with a wallraising ceremony. A typical Habitat house is approximately 1,100 square feet with three bedrooms; this home for the Abdi/Abdullahi family of six will have an extra bedroom to help accommodate the family’s size. The home is planned for completion in winter 2010.

Through a partnership with the Catholic Daughters, Habitat for Humanity Tucson began construction on its second home in Marana on February 20th. The house will become a home in eight to ten months to the Pottenger family: Harumi Pottenger, a single mother, and her six children ages nine to 19. The Catholic Daughters have donated the $85,000 sponsorship needed to finance the build. The lot for this home was provided through a partnership with the Town of Marana. Photos by Dan Francis

Habitat for Humanity Tucson celebrated the beginning of construction on the Santa Rita High School build home at its permanent location with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Located on the northeast corner of Alvernon and Ft. Lowell in Councilmember Glassman’s Ward, the house will become a home for Cristinna Bacoccini and her four children ages three to 19. The lot for this home was provided through a partnership with the City of Tucson, Ward 2, Rodney Glassman, Summit Development Group, LLC and The Planning Center.

Each year we raise the walls on several new homes for hardworking Tucson families. The 51 State representatives attending the 2009 Mrs. America pageant at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort joined Habitat for Humanity Tucson for a tree planting excursion at the Habitat Tucson Corazon Del Pueblo home development located at the intersection of I-10 and Craycroft. The Mrs. America pageant was drawn to a project with Habitat for Humanity Tucson because of its green initiative and Women Build projects.

This week more than 40 local Adolfson & Peterson Construction employees volunteered to help construct a park and play area for Habitat for Humanity Tucson’s Corazon Del Pueblo home development. Corazon Del Pueblo is home to more than 15 Habitat homeowners and will soon be the home to many more. At least six more Habitat houses are planned to be built there this year.

Habitat Tucson is proud to partner with the Jewish Community and many faith-based groups to build its first Tzedek Build home. The build, appropriately named Tzedek or ‘Abode of Justice’ in Hebrew, raised its walls on February 22, 2009. Thanks to the JCRC and Hadash for coming out to build!

After nearly 30 years of building homes for hardworking, local families in Tucson, Habitat for Humanity Tucson celebrated the completion and dedication of its 300th home. The house, which is part of Habitat’s High School Build program, was built almost to completion by Santa Rita High School and then moved to its final. Rosa McFeaters and her daughter, Marilyn, 8 received the keys to their first home at the ceremony on June 25.

After months of hard work and hundreds of hours of volunteer time, almost completely donated by women, Habitat for Humanity Tucson celebrated the completion of its eighth Women Build home on April 28. The Women Build house is now a home to Maria Flores and her adopted daughter, Nohemi, 8. Flores, said, “I’ve wanted to buy a home more than anything.”

On Saturday, April 25, more than 30 local Comcast employees and their families and friends volunteered to build at Habitat for Humanity Tucson’s first Marana Build home as part of Comcast’s eighth annual “Comcast Cares Day.” At the same time, more than 200 Comcast volunteers participated on this annual day of service by serving the neighborhood surrounding Habitat’s build site. The group participated in home improvement projects throughout the immediate area.
