Tzedek Build

Habitat Tucson is proud to partner with the Jewish Community and many faith-based groups to build a Tzedek Build home.

The build, appropriately named Tzedek or ‘Abode of Justice’ in Hebrew, raised its walls on February 22, 2009.  Habitat, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the Taye family dedicated the home on October 7, 2009 at the JCRC’s annual meeting.

Did you know?

- The homeownership rate in Tucson is 54%
- 35,000 households in Pima County are considered substandard
- It’s estimated that 25% of Pima County population is living in poverty
- 72% of all “old” housing in Pima County (i.e. housing 50 years+) is occupied by low-income families

The house will become a home to Tommy Taye and his wife, Benetta and daughter, Secret.  They are refugees from Liberia who were sponsored to come to Tucson by Jewish Family &  Children’s Service.

Tommy and Benetta work as caregivers and have been involved as volunteers to help other refugee families coming to Tucson.

“I still can’t believe we were approved,” said Tommy.  “This is our dream come true.”
