A Professional Volunteer

After spending many years involved with her children, who are now grown and out of the house, and their school activities, in addition to numerous church activities, being idle was not something Jan was prepared for.

Her husband, Art, suggested that she look around for volunteer opportunities and suggested she look into volunteering with Habitat for Humanity because of their mutual love of building. He thought that if Jan could check it out first, when he was finally ready for retirement, he would already have a foot in the door!

It was five years ago that Jan started volunteering in the front office at Habitat Tucson, manning the desk every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, answering phones, filing, greeting visitors and answering questions.

She soon felt that she would like to have a little more to do, so Jan began assisting the Development Department with organizing their filing system and soon other projects were being thrown her way.

Since beginning with Habitat, Jan’s day job has shifted a bit. She spends most of her time helping to care for her elderly father and three young grandchildren, but at least one day a week she is devoted to Habitat for Humanity. She says she just has to get her “Habi-Fix” on a regular basis.

Jan truly believes in Habitat’s mission and feels that, because of her participation, she has not only grown as a person but her world has expanded. She never dreamt her life would be so blessed, or that she would grow so much as an individual . . . and that is why her business card says: “Professional Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Tucson.”
